European Society for Evolutionary Biology

The purpose of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology is to support the study of organic evolution.

The European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) is an academic society that brings together more than 1500 evolutionary biologists from Europe and the rest of the world – researchers, lecturer, students, as well as journalists and other persons interested in evolution. By joining you become part of this academic community.

Letter to ESEB members

The European Society of Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) stands with fellow scientific societies in being profoundly concerned about the negative impacts upon science of recently-issued Executive Orders within the United States. Scientific research is a critically important endeavour for humanity, and modern society depends upon it for its well-being as well as for the search for understanding of our world. Recent challenges to the scale, scope and continuity of research funding in the US exemplify how rapidly scientific endeavour can be impeded. The US has contributed immeasurably to our field, and to science in general, and so these actions damage both the US and the global scientific enterprise. ESEB is particularly concerned about the potential for negative impacts upon the careers and aspirations of early career researchers, who represent science’s future.

ESEB maintains that science is fundamentally enabled and strengthened by academic freedom and the open and free exchange of views within a diverse scientific community. Scientific research also flourishes when underpinned by a foundation of independent, transparent and equitable peer scrutiny. ESEB opposes all efforts to impede these core principles. We support our fellow scientists and remain committed to our core aim of supporting the study of organic evolution within a safe, inclusive and respectful environment.

We are working with other scientific societies to unify and amplify our support and welcome your suggestions for how to be most effective in supporting science and our fellow scientists.

Sincerely, ESEB Executive
