A callorhynchid chimaeroid (Pisces, Holocephali) from the Nusplingen Plattenkalk (Late Jurassic, SW Germany)

Duffin, Christopher J.

Abstract

Two partial, mildly disarticulated specimens of a callorhynchid chimaeroid are described from the Upper Kimmeridgian Nusplingen Plattenkalk (Beckeri Zone, Ulmense Subzone). Details of the dentition and neurocranium clearly distinguish the specimens from the Plattenkalk 'rhinochimaerid' Elasmodectes avitus (v. Meyer), and preclude it from being a juvenile specimen of Ischyodus quenstedti (Wagner). Tooth plate morphology indicates that the specimens belong to the Family Callorhynchidae, but the lack of information for the occlusal surfaces of the plates means they are currently left in open nomenclature.
